in a kauai hawaii vacation rental online. Oahu, island in central
Hawaii, between Kauai and Molokai islands, in Honolulu County
is the most heavily populated of the Hawaiian Islands that is
why it is known as the Gathering Place. Two parallel mountain
ranges, the Koolau Range and the Waianae Range, cross Oahu from
northwest to southeast. A wide fertile plateau separates the
two ranges. Among the many popular beaches is the renowned Waikiki,
backed by the famous Diamond Head, an extinct volcano. The largest
community, Honolulu, is the state capital. Oahu was named in
honor of a good chief, the son of Papa, the Earth Mother, and
Lua. Under Oahu the island flourished, so the people called
the island Oahu-a-Lua (Oahu, child of Lua). If you are fond
of myths and legends, Oahu is the perfect place for you. According
to Hawaiian legend, on the island of Oahu you can hear stories
about ancient warriors or about the bad omenous pork. The classic
legend says that if one carries pork of any kind over the Nuuanu
Pali by car, the car will stop at a certain point on the way
and will not start again until the pork is removed from the
vehicle. To spread more mystery upon the story, it is said that
it happens only after dark. Some versions of the story require
the pork to be raw; other versions say that this happens after
dark. But don’t be afraid! This legend has its roots in
ancient Hawaiian mythology. According to the legend, the Hawaiian
volcano goddess Pele and the demigod Kamapua‘ (a half-man-half-pig)
didn’t have a friendly relationship, and the two agreed
not to visit each other. If one takes pork over the Pali, the
legend says, one is symbolically taking a piece of Kamapua‘a
from one side to the other, and it is said that Pele would stop
that from happening.
